Drawing a funny black horse – Day 5

This drawing is part of my 30-days drawing challenge, in which I’ll try to make a new drawing/painting daily.

Today I came across a poster of a funny looking black horse. He seemed to be smiling into the camera, and I therefore decided to try and draw this horse. It was also a perfect opportunity for me to test my new black watercolor paint, because that wasn’t present in my first watercolor set.

I found it challenging to draw this horse, because usually when you try to draw a copy of an existing picture which already looks crazy, the drawing will look even crazier, which is not what you want.

Halfway through I was having a hard time trusting the process, because it looked terrible, but eventually with the finishing touches added I have to admit that the result didn’t look too terrible at all. However, I did find the horse too dark, because he was completely black. To solve this problem I decided to add some color in the background, and make the halter a fresh pink color. This addition of color worked out well, and I like how the light colors in the background are in good balance with the black of the horse.
